Providence, RI

Brush up on state history at the Roger Williams National Monument, which commemorates the life of the founder of Rhode Island. Providence brims with museums and galleries of all kinds, the John Brown House Museum among the most impressive. Slater Mill Historic Site has been called the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, and The Meeting House is the first Baptist church built in America. In much more recent times, WaterFire, an installation of nearly 100 bonfires on three downtown rivers, has drawn visitors to the city from May to October. The city is home to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design and the Ivy League's Brown University.
