Dawson City gained notoriety during the Klondike Gold Rush, when some $29 million worth of the precious metal was extracted out of the area's landscape. Walk along Bonanza Creek to the Discovery Claim, where prospectors first located these riches in 1896, and visit Dredge No. 4, which was the largest wooden hull, bucket-line dredge when it began operating in 1913. Travelers can find their own fortune on a gold-panning excursion, then try to double it at the tables at Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall, a casino that also features live entertainment. A cruise on the Klondike Spirit paddle-wheeler teaches passengers about the region's history, while explorations of Tombstone Territorial Park afford a variety of flora and fauna sightings. From atop Midnight Dome, which is accessible by car or hiking trail, you can enjoy views of the Yukon River, Klondike Valley and Ogilvie Mountains.
